Weight of US commemorative gold coins
I am confused. The red book states: "Standars for weight and size are the same as previous half eagle gold coins." They list half-eagles as .24187 oz pure gold. That make them under a 1/4 qunce.
The COA that just came with my 1988 U S Olympic proof five dollar gold shows weight as .2687 troy ounce. Obviously that makes them over 1/4 ounce. Can anyone make sense out of this for me? Thanks! |
Re: Weight of US commemorative gold coins
The coin isn't .999 so it has .25 of gold + the lil extra from whatever other metal it was made with. When it talks about the old style half eagles those never were a full .250 to my knowledge.
EDIT: Actually it looks like the older half eagles were 90% gold and weighed more than .250 oz. 8.39 grams each. |
Re: Weight of US commemorative gold coins
.24187 AGW alloyed with silver and copper for the total weight.

Half-eagles were 0.900 fine.
0.2687 ozt of 0.900 gold = 0.24187 ozt pure gold |
Re: Weight of US commemorative gold coins
OK! Thank you so much. I bid based on .24187 and was surprised the COA listed .2687.
Why would they do that? Appreciate all your responses. |
